What does it take to race around the world or in the America’s Cup? Do you want to be the next CEO of North Sails? If you are interested in pursuing professional sailing, want to learn what it takes to run a marine business, or just want to experience sailing at the highest level, Oakcliff Sailing is the place for you.
Trainees are coached by a team of talented sailors and coaches specially selected by Volvo and America’s Cup sailor and Executive Director Dawn Riley. Athletes are led through both basic and advanced technical projects including match racing clinics, offshore races, inshore IRC racing, and land-based learning modules. Students will also have the opportunity to compete against sailors from across the globe who come to Oakcliff to compete in a variety of events. Additionally, famous sailors such as Dave Perry and Sally Barkow, and industry experts like Kimo Worthington from North Sails, and Forrest Williams from Marlow, frequently stop by throughout the summer.

Acorn Media/Onboard Reporting: Develop unique media talent
Dates TBD (possible end of June/early July), 2017 – Cost: $TBD (Need based scholarships available)
This one of a kind program focuses on training OnBoard Reporters (OBRs) to bring the story from offshore to the living room. The 2016 program was taught by Volvo Ocean Race OBR experts, Matt Knighton and Amory Ross as well as Sailing World Editor Dave Reed. The program will give reporters the skills they need to fill this integral media role. The program culminates in a true, offshore experience as trainees will be given the opportunity, if they so choose, to travel offshore as OnBoard Reporters for the east coast blue water classic Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race. Learn to communicate through video, story writing, photography, blogging, social media, and more. Not included in the program, but highly encouraged, is a Safety at Sea seminar offered July 1-2 which will prepare sailors for long distance travel offshore.
Acorn Offshore: +1,300nm & 26 days of ocean racing & training
June 29 – July 24, 2017 – Cost: $4,745 (Need based scholarships available)
This 26 day traveling program based out of Oyster Bay, New York will give sailors a chance to break the mold of the normal 420 racing circuit or the weekly yacht club race night for something totally different. Students will prepare for offshore and overnight sailing by completing a Safety At Sea course and sail training before setting off to race the east coast blue water classic Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race (bring your passport because this race finishes in Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada) and finishing up with industry tours in Newport, RI.
Acorn High Performance: Olympic class 49er skiffs & Nacra 17 catamarans
July 5 – July 18, 2017 – Cost: $2,520 (Need based scholarships available)
In 2013, 24 brand new high performance dinghies were donated to Oakcliff Sailing with the express intention of raising the level of high performance dinghy racing in the United States. As our fleet continues to grow, join US Sailing Team Sperry sailors and coaches at Oakcliff with the largest fleets of 49ers, 49er FXs, and Nacra 17s in the world. This 14 day intensive high-performance camp will prepare you on and off the water with stellar coaching to campaign management support and provides a chance to train with the best high performance sailors in the country.
Acorn Inshore: Match Racing with ISAF Ranked Coaches & Competitors
July 26 – August 14, 2017 – Cost: $2,900 (Need based scholarships available)
Interested in racing in the America’s Cup, or joining the World Match Race Tour? The Acorn Inshore program gives you the chance with private coaching from some of the sport’s best including Dawn Riley, Dave Perry and other world-class match racers. This program will offer the chance for sailors to compete in 3 different Match Racing regattas right here at Oakcliff in Swedish Match 40s. Students are based in Oyster Bay and will learn both on-the-water skills and tactics used in fleet racing and match racing as well as off-the-water skills including campaign planning, basic rigging skills and sail repair in our own sail loft.

NEW! This program is for high-adrenaline athletes with performance sailing experience who want to join the ranks of sailors who fly on hydrofoils. This camp will provide top notch coaching from world-class leaders in foiling aboard our new fleet of foiling mono-hulls and multi-hulls. A week sailing on some of the fastest sailboats in the world is an opportunity not to be missed. In addition to epic training days on the water, this camp will introduce sailors to how foils work and the evolution of foil design. Foiling requires fitness; athletes will also be provided with personalized feedback and fitness goals tailored to their personal health and wellness to ensure they are on track to be in top shape for this extreme form of sailing.
Custom Acorn Program: Can’t commit to a full program?

The Custom Acorn Program will give a few select sailors the chance to compete with the young pros according to their own custom schedule. Immersive structured apprenticeship for experienced sailors

For ambitious and independent men and women, the Sapling program offers students an opportunity they won’t find anywhere else in the world. If you are looking to log thousands of offshore miles competing in multiple offshore races, compete with the best match racers in the world on our fleet of Swedish Match 40s, and compete with and learn from top pros around the world, the Sapling program is for you. The Sapling program offers a springboard into the industry which spans everything from captaining an offshore racer to rigorous training in the sail loft, a chance to compete in the Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race and an opportunity to meet and network with leaders in the sailing industry. With a nearly 100% job placement rate, this summer long program will surely set you on your way. The tuition of this full-immersion program covers accommodation, coaching, all boats & facilities as well as some meals.
